Why you also want to be in your pet photography session – Canberra Pet Photographer

So you have booked a pet photography session for your dog or cat and the photographer asks you whether you would like to appear in the photos.  Suddenly you are asking yourself whether you need to be in the pet photos during the session.

Pet photography sessions are fun and relaxed photo sessions with toys and treats, but the focus remains on your pet.  I am particularly looking for moments with your dogs doing what they love, whether chasing a ball, hanging out at the park, or lounging on a favourite chair at home. But that does not mean that you should be excluded from the session.

Many of my clients are more than happy to be included in the images whereas others prefer the focus to remain on their pets.

I am more than happy with either option.  It comes down with what you as the client is comfortable with.

Ultimately it is up to you.

Here I look at the three reasons why I like to encourage my pet parents to dive in and be part of the photo shoot.

It is about capturing the important relationship between you and your pets

Anyone who has ever owned a pet knows they have the capacity for the kind of unconditional love that is generally held between a human and their offspring.  For many dogs, the attachment they feel towards their owner is fundamental to their well-being.

Humans forms a strong emotional bond with their pets.

We should be celebrating these relationships with our pets.  And photography is an important medium to capture this relationship and unconditional love between you and your pets.

They do not care how you look on the day of the photo session.  They just love you for what you are.

You do not need to be in all the images, just a couple to illustrate the love that you have for your pet and also the love that they have for you.

And if you still do not like the images, then you do not have to select them at photo reveal session.  No problem is too difficult to overcome.

You will treasurer them images in the future

These photo shoots aren’t just about capturing amazing photos, they are about creating beautiful memories with your dog.

Photography is all about remembering and celebrating the moments that matter most to you, and holding onto the memories.

You pets will not be around forever.  One day they will leave you. No matter how sad that day will be, it will only be slightly made easier by having those special and treasured memories.  Especially those ones in which you have together.

When they are gone the last thing that will matter is how you looked on the day.  You’ll just care about the fact that you have these special memories to hold on to well after they are gone.

You just do not know of the importance of these photos that are you getting now and how much more they will be worth in the future.

You can be creatively inserted in the photo

Some of my clients do not want to be included in the images because they feel uncomfortable in front of the camera or feel nervous about the how the images will turn out.

At the end of the day, it is your session and the final decision is up to you.

I never force my clients to get in front of the camera if they feel uncomfortable.  What I will do, however, is coach them and show them how I can creatively include them in the photo without showing their face or most of their body.  A popular pose is having their pet lay at the feet of the owner therefore excluding their uncomfortable images of having the pet and their owner looking into the camera.

Alternatively, I can use a shallow depth of field or use a silhouette to blur you out with the focus remaining on your pet.

You do not have to be in every image.  I generally only like to take three of four images with you and your pets to highlight the amazing relationship that you have with your pet.

At the end of the day, the choice is up to you because as I said, this is a pet photography session.  While I love to capture images of the two of you together, my main focus is always going to be on your pet.
