Belconnen Dog Obedience Club Tricks competition – Canberra Pet Photographer

I was lucky enough to be asked to capture the Belconnen Dog Obedience Club’s Tricks competition on Saturday, 24 July 2021.  It was nothing short of a cold, freezing Canberra winter’s day that greeted competitors and photographers.  However, there was excitement in the air as 10am approached and competition kicked off just as the sun was peaking its way through the clouds.

I was covering the novice ring.  It was difficult to know who was more nervous – the competitors or the dogs.  Thankfully most of the dogs were oblivious to me photographing them which allowed me to capture some great images.  Each of the

There was a large number of breeds that were on show during the events.  These included Papillons, poodles, Italian Lagotto Romagnolo, border collies, kelpies, Cardigan Corgi and Belgian Malinois just to name a few.

From what I understand, tricks competition is a relatively new event that came out of Dances with Dogs.  There were lots of shaking of paws, straddling legs, jumping and standing on or sitting in objects.  It was amazing watching the dogs perform.

Here are a couple of my favourite images from the day.

After about four hours of competition, dog handlers put their dogs safely in their cars where it was warmer and headed off to the presentation.  During the presentation we were all able to finally get out of the freezing cold weather.  Some needed coffee to warm up those freezing hands.  Ziwi was a sponsor of the day’s competition which meant some wonderful treats for the winning dogs.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day which allowed me to continue to hone my pet photography skills.  It also enabled me to improve my overall photography skills as I was shooting on manual.  I was having to quickly adjust my ISO to when the sun came out and then it would quickly hide behind the clouds.

I even managed to get some portraits in of a couple of dogs.  The french bulldogs were especially cute and I wanted to give them one big kiss.

I enjoyed immensely capturing the portraits of the dog handler’s dogs.  It is one of the most enjoyable job that I have as these portraits make their owners so happy.  If you are looking for portraits, please contact me to set up a non-salesy consultation.
