Belconnen Dog Obedience Club Dances with Dogs competition

Sunday morning brought a new day and a new competition to capture.  Across the border in Queanbeyan, the Belconnen Dog Obedience Club was holding their Dances with Dog competition.  The lack of power led to a change of building at the Queanbeyan Showgrounds and a slightly later start time.

While it was another cold and very fresh morning, we were lucky to be indoors and protected from the freezing wind chill factors.  However, there were large windows that were providing sensational light on the dance floor.  It was a photographer’s dream!!

The slighter later start was beneficial to me as it allowed me to get some early portraits of these very talented dogs.  Here are some of my favourite shots of the morning.

Dances with Dogs is the older brother of the Trick competition that was held just the day before.  It was not surprising to see some of the same competitors milling around nervously before their dance routine.  However, this time they were dressed in amazing costumes.

The competition consisted of two elements, freestyle, and Heel to music.  While this was only my first competition, it appears that Freestyle was a “free-flowing, flashy (due to the use of clever props and costumes) and tricky” while heelwork to music requires precision and very technical heelwork by the dogs.

There was a large number of breeds performing in the competition.  They ranged from papillons, poodles, Italian Lagotto Romagnolo, border collies, French Bulldogs just to name a few.  Clearly, it was a sport that was suitable for most breeds.

By 10.30am the competition had begun.  The spectators all marveled at the flawless teamwork displayed by people in costumes performing elaborate dance routines with their dogs.

I was absolutely amazed at the Dances with Dogs competition.  It was fun, entertaining, and colourful to watch these awesome dogs perform with their handlers.  For the dogs, it was a fusion of obedience, creativity, focus, and teamwork.  All the competitors’ routines were a combination of a dance with a skillfully choreographed routine performed to music.  The style of dance and music varied greatly between competitors.

It was obvious that all the competitors put in a lot of hard work for the competition.  While there were awards for the top three competitors, the real winners were the dogs that were on display on Sunday and the handlers that wore amazing costumes.  There were some hilarious moments where some of the dogs needed some strong encouragement to perform.  Others were less motivated to perform.

Ziwi was one of the sponsors of the day’s competition which meant some wonderful delicious treats for the winning dogs.
